Reactor Decommissioning History
Ranch Seco
revised 19 October 2014

Overview

Ranch Seco was a single B+W (Babcock and Wilcox) design commercial PWR power reactor. It had a generating capacity of 913 MWe and 2772MWt. It operated from April 1975 to June 1989. The reactor and internals were segmented and shipped off site. In 2009, the NRC released most of the site for unrestricted public use.

Reactor Decommissioning Specifics

Internals Removal
All work was performed underwater. Several remotely operated mechanical segmentation tools were used. All work on the internals was done by MOTA Corp (now Siempelkamp Nuclear Services or SNS).

Reactor Vessel Removal
The reactor pressure vessel was segmented using AWJ (Abrasive Water Jet). The plant owner, SMUD, self performed this work using robotics equipment supplied by S.A. Robotics.

Segmentation and Packaging Plan (S&P Plan)
SMUD released one with the RFP.
